It is business owner’s responsibility to take care of all the safety issues at work place. However, accidents happen, that is why it is very important to have Workers’ Compensation, even if you have only one employee. In California, for instance, it is not an option, it is required for employer to purchase workers compensation insurance.
Typically it includes two types of protection: workers’ compensation and employer’s liability.
An employer is required by law to cover any medical bills and lost wages of an employee who suffers a work related injury or an occupation related disease. It also provides death benefits to surviving spouses and dependents. Otherwise a court will make you pay the injured Worker’s Compensation benefits out of your own pocket.
Employer’s liability part pays for defense and legal judgments filed against the company by an employee or an employee’s family.
